Welcome to the new, lighter, sleaker, slimmer, International Association for the Study of Cooperation in Education. The past two years have seen a change of direction for the IASCE; we are getting back to our roots of studying cooperation in education. Our interests have expanded beyond cooperative learning to include investigations of the way in which schools can be organized and administered more cooperatively, to visualizing the inclusion of people of diverse backgrounds into our schools and society, to examining how we resolve coflicts that arise in our lives, to researching computer mediated communication. While we miss our glossy magazine, we are hoping to have a closer dialogue among our members. We will be printing articles of interest on our web page; in fact, you can read this newletter there (with accompanying pictures from a recent conference described below). I n Sweden this past summer the International Association for Intercultural Education organized a conference that was co-sponsored by the IASCE. In this newsletter we have printed the Keynote address that Elizabeth Cohen made at the conference, as well as the reactions of Mara Sapon-Shevin who was also presenting and playing there. As most of our members did not get a chance to attend the conference, perhaps these two contributions will bring a bit it to you. After reading them, I was sorry that I had missed the event. We also have a list of regional contacts and a description by Jane Promnitz of some happenings in British Columbia, Canada. If you have an association in your area please send us the name, address, and phone number of the contact person and perhaps a brief description of what is going on in your neck of the woods regarding the study or practice of cooperation in education. We welcome your ideas and particpation in the association as we forge our way into the future. Send us any of the following - a paragraph of a news flash of a happening in your field, an announcement of an upcoming conference, new publications or articles and we'll get the word out to all our members. Our next newsletter will be assembled by Mara Sapon-Shevin, our other co-president. You can send your news to her at msaponsh@mailbox.syr.edu or at Teaching and Leadership Programs, 150 Huntington Hall, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY 13244-2340. Yours in cooperation, |
