News from the Regionals

Around the globe (but mostly in North America) there are several regional associations who actively promote and support theuse of cooperative learning and cooperation among educators. This is their space to report on their activities and the trends in their corner of the world. At the end of the column you will find a list of the contact people for each of the active regional associations that are affiliated with the IASCE. If you know of changesthat should be made to this list please send them to Kathryn Markovchick. Or, if you are a member of a group of educators in your region and would like to have your activities more widely publicized please contact Kathryn Markovchick. Below is a report of activities from British Columbia, Canada.

The British Columbia Cooperative Learning Association (BCCLA) will be hosting its annual conference, "Creative Expression," on October 24, 1997 at the Simon Fraser University Harbour Centre in Vancouver, BC. Dr. Liana Forest will be the keynote speaker. I conducted a training session for the 12 campuses of North Island College at their Comox, BC, campus in June. With
40-something participants it was quite an exciting event. They are continuing sharing sessions using their linked interactive TV facilities. With small campuses scattered at far distances this will be most advantageous. It was most exciting to see a number of administrators in the workshop-truly the key for continuing support. Two of our faculty members at the British Columbia
Institute of Technology have received two separate grants to work on a team handbook for teachers and another one for students who will be participating in the teams. In our Learning Resources Unit I have spearheaded an effort resulting in an instructional job aid for making large groups interactive. It includes many cooperative activities.
