The core of transformative learning in Mezirow's theory is the three-part process of questioning assumptions. A learner must first become aware of assumptions and make them explicit. Second, the learner examines the sources of the assumptions and the consequences of holding them. Third, one asks the critical question, "Is this assumption valid?" If the answer is no and the learner chooses to reject or revise the assumption, transformation of a meaning scheme has occurred (Mezirow, 1991). Metaphorical exploration is a quick and effective way to make assumptions explicit, examine the meaning the learner has for these assumptions as well as their consequences, and make changes in them.
